Most interactions with AI begin with prompts: “Please review and suggest how to improve” or “How do you ______?” or “Can you verify this source?”
For a while, I was preoccupied with these questions and fine-tuning them to yield better results. I treated AI as a sophisticated search engine with a simple objective: ask a question, receive an answer.
The better the answer, the better the interaction. Or so I thought.
Over time, the more I conversed with AI, the more I noticed an intriguing pattern. It did not come from AI answering more precisely. It came from the nature of the conversation itself.
At some point, I stopped asking AI for answers. Instead, I started asking it why it answered the way it did.
Chronicling the meta experience
There is a tendency to evaluate AI solely through output. Did it write the article? Did it generate the code? Did it summarize the report?
These are certainly useful measures. They are also the least interesting.
The most compelling phenomenon happens in the space between prompt and response.
Every interaction contains a feedback loop. The user shapes the AI’s response; the response, in turn, shapes the user.
What fascinated me wasn’t the answer itself, but the emergence of a collaborative process. I began observing not just what the AI said, but how my behaviour changed in response.
Was I seeking a new point of view or merely validation? These self-reflections proved far more revealing than the output.
The mirror with a pulse
AI often functions as a kind of conversational mirror—a reflection that slightly pulses and rearranges familiar patterns into new configurations.
The technology produces responses from language. Yet users frequently experience something more. We project intent, personality, and understanding onto systems that have none of these qualities in the human sense.
A conversation with AI becomes a conversation with ourselves, mediated through a machine that continuously reshuffles language and ideas.
Sometimes the reflection reveals a blind spot; other times, a bias. Occasionally, it exposes assumptions we were unaware of.
From answers to assessment
The longer I use AI, the less interested I become in whether it will provide the response I expected. Accuracy matters, of course. But the ability to assess and render judgment matters more.
I can verify facts through other means. What I cannot outsource is deciding which facts matter, which arguments are more persuasive, or which decisions align with my values.
Instead of asking: “What should I think about____?” I found myself asking: “What else am I missing from my position about_____?”
The distinction is subtle. The first question seeks answers. The second seeks perspective. One delegates judgement. The other strengthens it.
The insight behind the conversation
My experience with AI has so far proven that the most valuable outcome is not productivity. It is the opportunity to self-observe.
By inviting us to articulate our reasoning, defend our preferences, revise our assumptions, and explain what we mean, AI can reveal aspects of our thinking we haven’t noticed before.
The desired output may be a draft, a proposed solution, or a block of code. But the deeper benefit is a better understanding of how we arrive at our conclusions.
This is why I continue experimenting. Not because I believe AI possesses extraordinary wisdom. Not because I expect perfect answers. Because the most revealing insight is neither present in the human nor the machine. It is in the moments that surface between them.
