grassier, not always greener

sporadic blogging these days, but always inspired to post sumfin whenever a confluence of events influence and shape the digital experience

the hollowing out of twitter
nothing has been more in-yo-face lately than the wanton destruction of a beloved social media icon: twitter

but despite its harrowing evisceration, attempts have been made before to dethrone it with alternative ‘twitter-killers’

we saw plenty of these from the pioneering, decentralized network of diaspora* to the more recent, hastily knitted threads, which btw is currently going through retention pains

more grassy than green
each time i join a new social media app, i notice everyone seems to praise how much greener it is (from the other side of whatever hellish social platform they were fleeing from)

this of course is an illusion. monsters (and sprites ; ) make a home anywhere and everywhere. a new social app may feel fresher and more promising, sure

but that’s just intoxication from the abundance of grass you’re rolling over. if you look closer, the grass is not more green or shall we say: evergreen

bluesky paradise?
finally got invited to jack’s pet project bluesky #yay and yes, you need to request an invite and may have to be patient

the app def has twitter’s look and feel but the content (or feed) curation is different, customizable. the best part is how it empowers you to moderate your own content

it’s early days here so i see a lot of techmeme and cats—perfect for me. i dig the pace and stillness of a quiet view

incremental evolution of social networks like twitter takes patience, trial and error and a purposeful slow-release with things like limited initial participation and self-driven moderation

this is how you organically build healthy social media ecosystems. 3 to 4 years following soft launch, they earn relevance and clout

passionate critical thinkers guided by socially scientific mantras shape the environment until a sustainable network with a distinct ethos resonates with all

is bluesky a better twitter? who knows. there’s still a lot of grass. hard to tell if various shades of green will eventually pop up and form a verdant palette — one worthy of an evergreen social media biome
